Presentation/Mini-bio:
Maracatu Nação Pernambuco was founded in 1989, by Bernardino José who, at that time, was a dancer at the Balé Popular do Recife. He invited Amélia Veloso, also a Balé Popular dancer, to sing and choreograph. In 1992 they created the first spectacle called "Batuque da Nação", telling the history of the maracatu in Pernambuco. The show had songs written by Bernardino and poetries by Solano Trindade. Since then, they have traveled through Brazil, as well as around the world, taking in their luggage especially Pernambuco's folk culture. Today their work not only involves maracatu, but many expressions of the culture of Pernambuco such as frevo, caboclinhos, cavalo-marinho, coco, ciranda, afoxé, among others.
