The theater name is a homage paid for a man who dedicated his whole life to the theater. Born in Pernambuco on July 5th, 1931, at Brejo da Madre de Deus, a village known for having the largest opened theater in Brazil: Nova Jerusalém. Luiz is from the Mendonça family, founder of the theater, and he acted at the Paixão de Cristo for many years, having played Jesus from 1952 to 1968.
Luiz Mendonça knew many famous thinkers from Pernambuco, such as Germano Coelho, Miguel Arraes, Paulo Freire, Ariano Suassuna and Francisco Brennand. It was amidst them that Luiz took part in the building of the Movement of Popular Culture of Recife, which arose with the intent of giving voice to the poor and marginalized people.
Created in the 60’s, MPC was the stage to 368 plas coordinated by Luiz Mendonça until the ominous April 1st, 1964, when the Military Regime was stated in Brazil and the MPC headquarters was taken by the military.
